Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Upgrades to items allow players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.
Usually objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas items with strong bases such as Eth titans don't change in their stats following being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, trinkets and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot by enemies, or obtained from chests and missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain point before they are upgraded.
In order to upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the player has to select it, and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the components or materials required for the upgrade.
There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be placed on any type of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions are gems that are only available in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add the suffix to the end of item names. For example the addition of the suffix Glyph would make a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool and replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in some fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a certain number of times before they're "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials needed do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of these items, instead of dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.
If an item is finished being leveled in this way, it is able to receive an upgrade set of components, as well as a boost in the chance that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is known as Artisan's Energy. It resets at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

This process can take between one and two hours and will cost the same amount of materials. However, it has a lower success rate.
Engineers will utilize a level to compare the height of the building with an established point, such as an existing benchmark. This is referred to as a "level-loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method ensures that buildings are constructed to the highest level of accuracy and safety.
Rerolling
Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a crucial element of the game that can increase the strength, damage or other attributes. This can be accomplished through the menu for items or by pressing the Reroll button of an upgraded item. Rerolling items can be expensive and should be used sparingly.
Reroll tokens are obtained by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can then be used to upgrade the original item, or to upgrade another similar item. Recyclable items come with a level gauge that shows how much of the upgrade gauge is filled. The cost and rarity of upgrading an item determines the amount of level filled.
In the past, certain upgrade items had priority affixes which made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you would receive the stats that mattered most to your build often than other. These included things such as the armor's total armor, thorns, and duration reduction stats that are controlled or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.
This was changed in the latest patch. Priority affixes were removed, and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling each stat. This can be good or bad, depending on what you want and need from your equipment.
Each upgraded item can come with a unique, fixed-value bonus that increases its strength by a certain percentage. These bonuses are added in addition to the usual affixes. The more you upgrade an item, the better chances of obtaining a unique bonus.
The game also comes with number sets that give an extra bonus when three or four upgraded items from the set are installed on a unit. This is a good method to give an individual character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players reroll their weapons and gear, especially in the early stages. Rerolling is a way to gain a stronger character faster, which allows players to advance in the game and reach higher tiers.
Sets

Clicking the Upgrade button will display the attributes of the item and the necessary items needed to upgrade it. The item's attributes will be displayed together with any required items. To upgrade the No-mouth Face for instance, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, along with 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards. Players can also go to the Leaderboard or Golden vendor in Cyrodiil to find out the requirements for upgrading specific items.
In general the jewelry and weapons have more value for trade when they are fully upgraded than armor. Particularly, for weapons that feature damage glyphs that are spell-like or weapon-related upgrading them to gold is recommended because it will provide a significant increase in their performance. Armor that has an upgraded appearance will benefit from this upgrade because its defense will increase as it moves from purple to gold.
